The Clarens Garden Club was founded by Nancy Whittaker in September 2000. Her garden was voted the best garden in Johannesburg in a competition organised by the Transvaal Horticultural Society before she retiredto Clarens. As she is still a keen gardener she decided to start a garden club in Clarens.
There are about 50 members of this popular club which meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month usually at a member’s home. The fee to join is R100 and the annual subscription is R100. Visitors pay R20 per meeting. The meetings are very pleasant social events where the members can listen to excellent speakers drawn from all over the country, talking about many aspects of gardening. Members co-operate bringing plants from time to time which are sold to other members to help defray costs of obtaining speakers. At the meetings delicious teas are served which are provided by the members who take it in turn to cater about every 18 months. From time to time excursions are planned to places of interest to gardeners.
The garden club committee comprises a chairman, secretary and treasurer. If you wish to join please contact Leone du Preez, the secretary, on 058-256-1738 or Elrina on 082 901 0111.
